Union Women’s Basketball defeats Allen University for their first AAC win

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Union College women’s basketball team continues to put up high numbers as four scores in double-digits to push the Bulldogs past Allen University 76-61 to for their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) win on Saturday.

With the win, the Bulldogs move to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-1 overall and in the AAC.

TURNING POINT

It was a back and forth battle during the first half between Union and Allen that ended with the Bulldogs having the upper hand going into the halftime 30-29 lead. Union came out for the third quarter with shots firing as Logan Calvert and Chariss Wilson each hit back-to-back baskets to give Union a 36-31 lead with 7:33 remaining. With just a five-point lead, Brooke Hammonds went on a streak scoring seven points with a field goal, two free throws, and a shot beyond the arch to Union a little cushion.

The Yellow Jackets managed to fight their way back from being down by nine to a 49-47 deficit to start out the final quarter. In the fourth, Union went on a run getting a 14-point lead to make it 71-57 with just under two minutes remaining thanks to the Haley Tye for making three for her four shots from the line that set Union up for a big win over Allen in conference action.

BULLDOG NOTES

  • Hammonds collected her third double-double of the year with 18 points and 17 boards.
  • Tye along with Hammonds led the Bulldogs in points with 18 on the night.
  • Wilson went 4-8 from the field for 15 points, while collecting 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
  • Calvert finished out the double-digits with 12 points hitting six for 16 from inside the arc.

QUOTABLE

“I am really proud of how we bounced back from our loss this week and got things done tonight,” said Tye. “We got off to a slow start in the first half, but really came out in the second half and got some stops and shared the ball offensively to seal the win.”

NEXT FOR THE BULLDOGS

Union will travel to Kentucky Christian on Wednesday for another AAC showdown. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
