Obituary for Willie Messer (1934-2024)

Mr. Willie Messer, 90, of Somerset, formerly of Walker, passed away Tuesday morning, July 30, 2024 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset. He was the son of the late Sawyer and Martha Warren Messer born May 14, 1934 in Knox County.

Willie was a member of the Salem Baptist Church, retired coal miner and former truck driver for J & R Trucking. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He delighted in growing a large garden and was known for his green beans. Willie was a kind and loving person who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

On April 17, 1955 he united in marriage with Eva Grubb in Knox County.

In addition to his parents and wife, Eva, he was preceded in death by his sons, Charlie and Sawyer Messer; brothers, James, Reed and Sawyer Jr. Messer and sisters, Nancy Mills, Bernice Smith, Geneva Messer, Helen Grubb and Sally Messer.

Survivors include his loving children, Junior Messer and wife, Brenda, of Osgood, IN, Joyce Beaty of Seymour, IN and Mary Kegley of North Vernon, IN; sisters, Barbara Baker of Burnside and Lois Gambrel of Walker; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Friday, August 2, at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ricky Broughton officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Messer Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday after 1 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
