Mr. Willie Hammons, 66, of Barbourville, passed away Monday evening, September 11, 2023 at Baptist Health Lexington. He was the son of the late Benny and Maudie Reynolds Hammons born April 21, 1957 in Barbourville.
Willie was a maintenance supervisor with Firestone and was of the Baptist faith. In his spare time, he loved fishing and camping. Above all, he enjoyed time spent with his family, especially the grandkids. He truly loved life and made the most of it, with God put first.
On Valentine’s Day, 2014 he united in marriage with Penny Gambill in Gatlinburg, TN.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Glendon Hammons and Edith Hubbard.
Survivors include his loving wife and fishing partner, Penny Gambill Hammons of Barbourville; children, Matthew and Michael Hammons, both of Barbourville, James Gambill and wife, Natasha and Amber Strunk and husband, John, all of McCreary County; sisters, Nora Baker and Ann Bryant and husband, Avery, all of Barbourville, Mary Patterson and husband Rev. Clyde of Bell County and Gail Hinkle of Hinkle; a brother, Charlie Hammons and wife, Theresa, of Naples, FL; cherished grandchildren, Nate and Brayden Hammons, Alexis Wildermuth, Megan and Abbygale Tucker and Preston Strunk; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday September 16 at 3 P.M. with Rev. Clyde Patterson and Rev. Chris Brock officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Grindstaff Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be John Strunk, James Gambill, Matthew Hammons, Michael Hammons, James Baker and Avery Bryant. Serving as honorary bearers will be his coworkers at Firestone.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday after 1 P.M. until the funeral hour.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
