Obituary for William Otha Steger (1944-2025)

Barbourville, Ky. – William Otha Steger, age 80, of Corbin, Kentucky, passed away January 10, 2025. William was the son of William Estill Steger and Nancy Ella Gibson born to them January 27, 1944.

William was born and raised in Independence, Kentucky.  He was a graduate of Kenton County High School.  At the age of 24, William enlisted in the US Army serving the country 3 years during the Vietnam War. William united in marriage to Mary Lee Surgner July 5, 1986.  He worked as an electrician for IBEW Union 212 for many years.  William was a Christian of the Baptist Faith.  He loved God, his country, and his family immensely.  In his spare time, he enjoyed building and flying small planes.  William will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  

Left behind to mourn William’s passing is son Robin Cox, daughters Stacy Warfield Bright (Danny), and Nanette Tye, dear sister Nancy Jane Himes, niece Cheryl King (Todd), and nephew Chris Himes. Eleven grandchildren, Darrell Woolum (Michelle), Mark Woolum, Nickolas Goley, Brandon Goley, Sarah Tye, Derrick Tye, Jeremy Cox, Justin Cox, Joshua Cox, Allen Warfield, Jessica Warfield and 16 cherished great grandchildren also survive William and will miss him dearly.  In addition to his parents William and Nancy Steger, William was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lee Surgner and daughter Teresa Cox Collins.

A grave side service at Barbourville Cemetery is planned for Mr. Steger on Monday, January 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM.  Reverend Tommy Frazier will officiate. Casket Bearers are Derrick Tye, Allen Warfield, Glenn Mason, Brandon Goley, and Chris Himes.
