Obituary for William David “Waxy” Johnson (1956-2023)

Mr. William David “Waxy” Johnson, 66, of Barbourville, the husband of Theda Carter Johnson, passed away Saturday morning, January 14, 2023 at his home. He was the son of the late Emmitt and Lola Mae Peters Johnson born on February 4, 1956 in Laurel County.

Waxy was a former mechanic and worked many years at the Knox Body Shop as a tow truck operator. A skilled auto body repair man, he could often be found in his garage working on his latest project. He enjoyed going to the drag strip and spending time with his numerous friends, especially his brothers. He loved to play pool and to dance. He had a strong will and would push himself to finish whatever task he started. He loved his fur babies Max, Tinker, Peewee and Blondie. Time with his family brought joy to Waxy and his grandson Charles was the light of his world.

On March 8, 1985, he united in marriage with Theda Gail Carter and to this union a daughter was born.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two infant bothers, Clyde and Luther Johnson, two infant sisters, Thelma and Ethel Marie Johnson, sisters, Mabel June Ryan, Margaret Anne Jones, Patsy Anne Burroughs and Reba Kay Wilson, brothers, Harley “Tommy” and James Paul “Chip” Johnson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Theda Gail Johnson of Barbourville; a beloved daughter Rachel Johnson and fiancé, C.J. Tapp of Richmond; brothers, Shelby Johnsom and wife, Carol of Gray and S.M. Johnson; a cherished grandson, Charles David Tapp; brothers-in-law, Tony Wilson and Bill Jones; a sisters-in-law, Kathleen Johnson and Deborah Carter Middleton and husband, James of Salida, Colorado; a special buddy, Carrie Matlock; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, January 21 at 2 P.M. with Brother David Barnard officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be C.J Tapp, Mark McChargue, Colonel Gray, Robert David Philpot, Tim Johnson and Jhector Colchado.

Honorary bearers will be Gary Ledington, Travis Smith, Wendell Bond, James Warren, his racing buddies, nieces and nephews and all of his family and friends.

Friends may call at the funeral home Friday between 6 and 8 P.M. and on Saturday until the funeral hour.
