Vernie Jackson Hinkle Hensley was born in Barbourville, KY on March 3, 1944. She unexpectedly passed on November 25, 2024 in London, KY.
Vernie was welcomed into Heaven by her parents Estle and Alabama Jackson, her brothers Estle “Junior” Jackson, Jr., Ellis Jackson, Tip “Peanut” Jackson, Donnie Jackson, her sister Wilma Mills, her sister-in-law Sharon Jackson, her brother-in-law Clarence Mills, her son-in-law John Sergent, and her beloved dog Gunner. Vernie is survived by her brother Jankie Jackson, her sisters, Barbara Haynes (John Haynes), and Erma Dunaway (Don Dunaway), her children Retha Hale (Lewis Hale), Letha Sergent, Garrett “Bub” Hinkle, and Michael Hensley (Tina Hensley), her grandchildren Alysha Floyd (Brandon Floyd), Kayla Sergent, Lucas Hale, Kelsey Hinkle, Blake Hinkle (Morgan Hinkle), Bryanna Hensley, Faith Hinkle, Chace Adkins (Amy Bradford-Adkins) and Hunner Adkins, and her great-grandchildren Boone Floyd, Ezekiel Hensley, Leo Floyd, and Ellie Ann Hinkle, and her dog Piper, along with a host of friends and family to mourn her passing.
A devout Christian, Vernie was a member of the Full Faith Church of God. Family was the most important treasure to Vernie. She ensured that her family got together for every holiday (and sometimes just a random Tuesday) and fed them way too much food. She greatly enjoyed spoiling her great-children with candy, toys, money and love every chance she got. She regularly attended the Corbin Senior’s Center where she enjoyed playing (and winning) at cards and BINGO and socializing with her closest friends. She enjoyed cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats. Her favorite past-times, however, were running the roads, looking for deals at yard sales and Goodwills, and spending valuable time with her family.
In Vernie’s presence, you never questioned if you were loved and cared for. She’d greet you with a warm hug and a hot meal. She never met a stranger, and if you were around her more than once, she probably considered you family. She spent many years caring for foster children, some of which still call her “mom.” She was also quick-witted and hilarious, always with a ridiculous joke or story to share. While we are heartbroken here on Earth, we are comforted knowing that she was welcomed with open arms by our Heavenly Father saying, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
