Obituary for Stella Martin Smith (1943-2024)

Mrs. Stella Martin Smith, 81, of Bailey Switch, passed away Wednesday evening, December 11, 2024 at the home of her daughter. She was the daughter of the late Caleb and Lillie Mae Smith born January 14, 1943 in Barbourville.

Stella was a former deputy jailer and a member of the Free Spirit Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Barbourville Women’s Study Club. She enjoyed traveling, loved Jesus and never met a person she wasn’t kin to in one way or another.

On October 10, 1963 she united in marriage with Henry Allen Martin who preceded her in death. She later united in marriage with Carlson Smith who also preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Virgie Vaughn and Evelyn Smith and brother, T.J. Smith.

Survivors include her loving children, Sharon Hampton and husband, Jerry, of Dandridge, TN and Allen Martin of Bailey Switch; sister, Nettie Davidson and husband, Lonnie, of Barbourville; cherished grandchildren, Cassie and Hailey Martin, Matt Hampton and wife, Emily, Andy Hampton and Shannon Ruhl and Nate Hampton; beloved fur baby, Buddy; among other loved ones and dear friends.

Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, December 16 at 12 Noon with Rev. Jabe Smith, Rev. Roger Liford and Rev. Steve Mayle officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Lawson Spurlock Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday between 2 and 5 P.M. and Monday after 10 A.M. until the funeral hour.

If you wish, gifts may be made in the form of contributions to the Free Spirit Baptist Church Youth Group.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
