Obituary for Shirley F. “Buck” Treadway (1927-2024)

Mr. Shirley F. “Buck” Treadway, 97, of Barbourville, passed away Thursday morning, July 25, 2024 in Lexington.  He was the son of the late Sherley H. and Sallie Frederick Treadway born on February 16, 1927 in Barbourville.

Buck was a former co-owner and operator of Treadway Brothers and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Barbourville, where he attended regularly.  Buck was a dedicated community member and his commitment to education was evident through his remarkable tenure as Chairman of the Board of Barbourville Independent Schools, where he holds the United States record for serving for over 51 years and was a former member of the Lion’s Club.  Buck enlisted as a Navy Seabee during World War II, where he contributed to the final efforts to defeat Japan in the Philippines.

Buck enjoyed local high school sporting events and cheering on his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.  He cherished time spent with family and friends, celebrating birthdays and special holidays.

He kept to himself and often kept busy with handiwork wherever he traveled, fixing or mending broken appliances or adjusting crooked cabinets, drawers or windows.  He was always willing and ready to help others in need.  His legacy is one of dedication, kindness and community.

On June 20, 1951, he united in marriage with Lois Benjamin and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, and a brother, Donald C. Treadway.

Survivors include his loving children, Elizabeth Belle Oldham and husband, Jeff, of Lexington and Lyman Michael Treadway and wife, Melanie, of Sugar Land, TX; a sister, Janice Weiland of Cincinnati, OH; treasured grandchildren, Jeffrey Oldham, Seth Oldham and wife, Antoinette, Benjamin Oldham and fiancé, Margaret, Jennifer Treadway, Adam Treadway and wife, Laura, and John Treadway; a great grandson, John Benjamin Oldham; a close family friend of many years, Luanne Mitchell; among other loved ones and dear friends.

A celebration of his life will be held in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, August 10 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Thom Brown officiating. Inurnment will be in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday, August 10 after 11 A.M. until the service time.

Memorial contributions may go to the First United Methodist Church, 312 N Main St., Barbourville, KY 40906 in his memory.
