Rev. Alvin Dunn, 82, of Cannon, passed away Friday morning, February 28, 2025 at his home. He was born October 1, 1942 in Bell County to the late Commiedore and Mattie Epperson Dunn.
He was a self-employed carpenter, a member of the Parkway Baptist Church and pastored several area churches over the last 58 years including Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Beech Springs Baptist Church and Horn Branch Baptist Church. He loved studying and reading the Bible and sharing the gospel with people. He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing, picking on people and socializing with family and friends. Many will remember Alvin’s strong handshake. He faithfully served in the Kentucky Army National Guard.
On June 20, 1964, he united in marriage with Bonnie Root.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by parents-in-law, Fount and Marie Root; brothers, Billy Jack Dunn and Roger Dale Dunn; a sister, Loretta Mills; a granddaughter, Ambria Dunn; a grandson, Jeffrey Duce Dunn and a brother-in-law, Lucky Hammond.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 60 years, Bonnie Dunn of Cannon; children, Jeffrey Allen Dunn and wife, Sara, of Bowling Green, James David Dunn and Jodi of Woollum, David Dunn of Cannon, James Edward Dunn and Kelly of Cannon, Billy Joe Dunn of Barbourville, Bobby Dunn and wife, Brenda, of Woollum, Kathy Stroop and husband, Nasby, of Frankfort, Stacie Marie Hammond and husband, James, of Knoxville, TN, Billie Joyce Bright and husband, Michael, of Woollum, Tina Kay Mills and husband, Billy, of Barbourville, Rebecca Carol Dunn of Barbourville, Donna Elliott and husband, Doyle, of Corbin and Lenora Dunn of Indiana; adopted children, Willie and Carol Epperson, Tim and Crystal Weinners and Billy and Debbie Taylor; sisters, Mary Hammond of Florida and Kathi Baker and husband, Keith, of North Carolina; two brothers, Commie Dunn and wife, Mary, of Florida and Larry Dunn and wife, Pat, of Ohio; sisters-in-law, Darlene Frost of Knoxville, TN and Barbara Bargo and husband, Ted, of Barbourville; a brother-in-law, James Loyd Root of Woollum; Woody Dunn of London, who he loved as a brother; 26 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, March 4 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Dale Phipps, Rev. Jerry Vaughn and Rev. David Barnard officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Patterson Cemetery with military funeral honors.
Casket bearers will be Tim Phipps, Johnny Shell, Scott Dunn, Brian Miracle, Keith Baker, Jeremy Bargo, Jared Bargo, Tyler Dunn, Brian Dunn, Dalton Dunn, John Richard Pasternak, Elijah Broughton, Nick Elliott, Jacob Elliott, Jonathan Kinney, Ryan Dunn, Wyatt Pasternak, Alec Pasternak, David Micaiah Dunn, Robert Alvin Stroop and Landon Dunn. Serving as honorary bearers will be all children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and Sallie North, Mike Helton, Jimmy Miller, Ronnie Stout, Dewayne Smith, Mickey Smith, Billy Taylor, Ted Bargo, Rick Heath, Edward Carter, Dr. West, LaShonda Ferguson, Barbara Bargo, all local ministers, friends and neighbors.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Sunday between 6 and 9 P.M., Monday between 10 A.M. and 8 P.M. and Tuesday prior to the funeral hour.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
