Obituary for Patricia Louise Powell (1940-2024)

Barbourville, Ky. – Patricia Louise Powell, 84, of Barbourville, Kentucky went home to be with her Lord on the afternoon of Saturday, December 7, 2024. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love and presence of her family, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, devotion, and unwavering faith.

Born on July 18, 1940, Pat was the eldest child of Chester Author Hammons and Ruby Lee Pursiful. From an early age, she exhibited a love of learning, a deep sense of compassion, and a creative spirit that would carry her through life. She attended Flat Lick Elementary School and Knox Central High School, where her dedication and drive shone brightly. Pat later attended Union College, where she not only furthered her education but also met the love of her life, Walter Powell, Jr.

Pat and Walter were married on August 16, 1961, embarking on a beautiful partnership that would span decades. The couple initially made their home in Nashville, Tennessee, where Pat worked for Dowen Advertising as an account assistant. She found immense joy in her work, especially her contributions to Charm Step Shoes, where her creativity came to life through photography sessions, magazine layouts, and billboard advertising campaigns. Her eye for detail and her appreciation for design made her a valuable asset and brought her personal fulfillment.

In time, Pat and Walter returned to Barbourville, Kentucky, where they began a new chapter. Pat continued her professional journey as a case worker with the Department for Community Based Services, where she compassionately served families in need. Her greatest calling came when she became a mother. Devoting herself fully to her family, Pat created a home filled with love, warmth, and hospitality. She delighted in hosting gatherings for family and friends, ensuring everyone who entered her home felt welcomed and cherished.

Pat was also deeply committed to her community and to her faith. She served as a member and President of the Barbourville Junior Woman’s Study Club, working to support local initiatives. She was a member of the Dr. Thomas Walker Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, celebrating her family’s heritage and serving others.

A devout Christian, Pat’s faith was the foundation of her life. She shared her gift of music as the pianist for Dewitt Baptist Church, often playing her favorite piece, The Lord’s Prayer. Her daily prayers were a source of strength for herself and hope for those around her.

Pat will be remembered for her generosity, her unwavering devotion to her family, and her creativity. Her gentle spirit touched the lives of everyone she met, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her.
