Obituary for Oakley Smallwood Sr., (1937-2022)

Mr. Oakley Smallwood Sr., 84, of Barbourville passed away Monday morning, March 14, 2022 at St. Joseph London.  He was the son of the late Bishop and Phoebe Jane Wagers Smallwood born on July 16, 1937 in Clay County.

Oakley was a former employee of the Knox Motor Company for 28 years and owned his own business for 16 years.  He was a member of the Barbourville Church of God where he was a former Sunday School superintendent and previously served on the board of trustees.  He dedicated his life to God, his faith, his family and was a man of strong moral character.  He enjoyed cooking soups beans and hoe cakes, growing roses, spending time with his family, fishing and had a great interest in knives and watches.

On December 8, 1956, he united in marriage with Amanda G. Garland and to this union nine children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Oakley Smallwood Jr.; three infant sons, Samie Gerald, Otis and Wesley Smallwood; two grandsons, Rocky Evans and Charles Bishop Smallwood; two brothers, Adrian and Robert Smallwood; four sisters, Myrtle Smith, Betty Allen, Leona Garland and Roxie Smallwood and a special sister-in-law, Anna Louise Garland.

Oakley is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Amanda Smallwood of Barbourville; five daughters, Sherry Gray and husband, Johnny, of Lily, Darlene Bingham of Barbourville, Barbara Smith and husband, Tim, of Barbourville, Sharon Wells and husband, Steve, of Corbin and Rose Ella Jones and husband, Kenneth, of Corbin; a step-brother, Sim Dunn Jr.; 15 grandchildren, Beth Smallwood, Robert Evans, Christopher Gray, Angelina Gray, Mandi Hearld, Maciah Smith, Nikki Vaughn, Shawntae Smith, Matthew Wells, Bradley Wells, Shawn Jones, Joey Lee Jones, Shannon Merritt, Ashlie Waltz and Kendra Sevier and 33 great grandchildren. He was deeply loved by his community and leaves behind many dear friends and family members to mourn his passing.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, March 22 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Mark Gilbert officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Robert Evans, Miciah Smith, Chris Gray, Cameron Smallwood, Malachi Castle, Gavin Castle, Zack Waltz, Ryan Sevier and Bradley Wells.  Honorary bearers will be the staff at St. Joseph London, John David King, Charles Miles and Joe Hopper.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Tuesday prior to the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
