Mrs. Mildred Shupe Leger, 94, of Georgetown, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away Saturday morning, May 4, 2024 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Joshua Richard and Ada Pearl McDonald Shupe and was born on April 23, 1930 in Barbourville.
Mildred was known for her feisty, friendly, competitive nature, her love for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and her talent for crocheting beautiful afghans for her family. She enjoyed spending time playing cards with loved ones, bowling, creating ceramics, collecting owl memorabilia and watching Hallmark movies.
Her educational journey led her to attend Barbourville High School and later graduated from Cumberland College in Williamsburg with a BS in Elementary Education. Mildred pursued a fulfilling career in teaching and taught in Ohio and Whitley County. She was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church in Corbin and later became a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Louisville.
In July 1946, she united in marriage with Glen Monroe Leger and to this union three children were born.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Monroe Leger; a son, George Edward “Eddie” Leger; a sister, Betty Burnett and brothers, Harold and Langdon Shupe.
Mildred is survived by her children, Dennis Ray Leger and wife, Teresa, of Clarksville, IN and Linda Leger Taylor and husband, James “Jim” of Georgetown; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; among other loved ones and dear friends.
Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, May 11 at 12 Noon with Rev. James Vandy officiating. She will be laid to rest in the McDonald Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Drew Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, David Taylor, Micah Ferrell, Ben Ferrell and Jacob Ferrell.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday after 10 A.M. until the funeral hour.
