Mr. Melvin Smith, 80, of Hinkle, passed away Saturday evening, August 19, 2023 at his home. He was the son of the late Clarence and Nola Smith born on February 13, 1943 in Clay County.
Melvin was a former mechanic with Farmer Supply and Explosives and a member of the Dripping Springs Baptist Church for over 57 years. He enjoyed playing Bluegrass music, hunting and repairing things. He loved being involved in church activities and dearly loved spending time with family.
On April 16, 1966, he united in marriage with Eller Bargo and to this union two children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a dearly loved daughter, Greta Callebs and husband, Dewayne; sisters, Ermolee Smith, Irene Jackson, Leona Messer and Elva Jean Smith and two brothers, Reece and Carlson Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 57 years, Eller Bargo Smith of Hinkle; a beloved daughter, Valerie Warren and husband, Greg, of Hinkle; two sisters, Ernestine Collins of Girdler and Ilene Hubbard and husband, James Ray, of Hinkle; six treasured grandchildren, Maegan Mayne and husband, Robby, Ashley Fugate and husband, Shawn, Adam Callebs and Megan, Hannah Owens, Cassie Frazier and husband, Cole, and Matthew Warren; ten great grandchildren, Layla, Jayce, Peyton, Jake, Brody, Alyssa, Jay, Jaylynn, Ryland and Graysen; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Friday, August 25 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ricky Broughton, Rev. Vernon Morris and Rev. Dewayne Smith officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Callebs Creek Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be his nephews. Serving as honorary bearers will be his church family and his music buddies.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Friday prior to the funeral hour.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
