Lt. Colonel (USAF ret.) Jack V. Foley passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2020. He was born to Robert Tye and Letha Petrey Foley on August 27, 1930.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Ann Campbell Foley, sons Jack V. Foley, Jr. (Ann) of Port Orange, FL and James W. Foley (Leanell) of Williamsburg, KY, grandson Jerrod Foley (Madison) of Richmond, KY, granddaughter Erin Gallaher (Michael) of Harlem, Georgia; and three great-granddaughters.
Mr. Foley served as teacher and principals at Poplar Creek High School and Williamsburg Independent School. Under his guidance Williamsburg Elementary became a member of the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (the high school had been a member for many years). He served as a chairperson at the SASC convention in Atlanta, GA in 1990. He wrote articles for the Kentucky English Journal. He spearheaded the installation of Kentucky Education Television (closed circuit) in the school. He was the coordinator of the Title I federal programs. After retiring in 1991, he organized the Whitley Area Retired Association made up of retired teachers from Corbin, Whitley County, and Williamsburg. He served two terms as president and twenty years as Legislative chairman.
Mr. Foley has degrees from Cumberland College (AA), Union College (BS), Eastern State Teachers College (MA), and the University of Kentucky (rank one).
After graduation from Union College he served in the United States Air Force. In 1953 he was discharged from active service and served in the Reserves until retiring from the USAF in 1990.
For twelve years he worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as scoutmaster. He took many young men to scout camp, camping, and hiking. Every April they hiked the trail from Middlesboro, KY to Ewing, VA. During the flood of 1979 his Scouts moved much material from the lower level of the Whitley County Library and cleared material from some Main Street businesses. Two of his scouts reached the rank of Eagle.
Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Highland Park Cemetery Davis Addition with Rev. Gerald Mullins officiating. Interment will be in Highland Park Cemetery Davis Addition.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM Saturday, August 22, 2020 at Ellison Funeral Home.
Military Graveside Honors will be performed by American Legion Post 88 of Corbin, KY.
