Obituary for Lovella Helton Pickard (1928-2025)

Mrs. Lovella Helton Pickard, 96, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025 at Baptist Health Corbin. She was the daughter of the late Roscoe Wiley and Florence Valentine Helton born December 9, 1928 in Knox County.

Lovella was a retired licensed practical nurse and a member of the Apple Grove Baptist Church. She dedicated many years of service to her community working at both the Knox County Hospital and Knox County Health Department. She was also the “family nurse” who always took care of those in her family when they were sick. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting and making afghan quilts. She also loved cooking and always made sure her family was fed.

Lovella was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

In 1952, she united in marriage with Paul Pickard, who preceded her in death.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a dearly loved son, Arnold Edward “Eddie” Corey; brothers, H.C., Don, Tommy J. and George Helton and sister, Beatrice Gray.

Survivors include her loving brother, Lewis Wade Helton and wife, Carol, of Whitley County; daughter-in-law, Jean Corey; cherished grandsons and caregivers, Christopher Edward Corey and Clinton Timothy Corey and wife, Tonya, all of Barbourville; cherished great-grandchildren, Canaan Corey and Hannah Corey both of Barbourville; great-great-granddaughter, Addie Jo Corey; nephews, George Allen Helton and Clay Helton; niece, Amy Walker and husband, Steve; great-nephew, Steven Lane Walker; special friends, Sandra Riley and Joyce Spivey; among other relatives and dear friends.

A graveside service will be conducted in the Hammons Cemetery Wednesday, January 15 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Paul Cooper officiating.

Serving as casket bearers will be her family and friends.

Family and friends of Mrs. Pickard will gather at the funeral home at 1:45 P.M. and travel together in procession to the cemetery for the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
