Obituary for Leemon Powell (1939-2023)

Mr. Leemon Powell age 84 of Louisville, Kentucky, formerly of Knox County, departed this life on Monday, September 4, 2023 in the University of Louisville Hospital. He was the son of Joe and Axie (Sizemore) Powell born to them on July 13, 1939. On April 2, 1965, he united in marriage with Jewell Dean Bargo and to this union one son was born. Leemon enjoyed watching Nascar Races and working in his garage. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his grandchildren. Leemon accepted the Lord as his personal Savior early in life and he attended Thixton Lane Baptist Church. He was a member of the Bullitt County Free and Accepted Masons, Lodge # 155. He also served as Mayor for four years in the city of Hillview and was on the city council for many years.

      He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Axie Powell, one brother, John Marshal Powell and his mother and father in-law, General and Lola Bargo.

      Left behind to mourn is passing, his devoted wife of fifty-eight years Jewell Dean Powell of Louisville, one son, John Powell and wife Misty of Shepherdsville, two beloved grandchildren, Jacob Powell and Haley Mills, six siblings, Howard Powell of Bimble, Willard Powell of Bowling Green, Lois Stanek and husband Tom of Northville, Michigan, Evelyn Mills, Everett Powell and Pauline Powell all of Bimble, dear friends, Michael and Joann Newman of Shepherdsville and Shirley Akers of Cox’s Creek, a niece, Dr. Melissa Powell Traynelis and husband Chris of Sevierville, Tennessee, a nephew, Randal Willard Powell of Bowling Green and a great niece, Katie Powell Traynelis of Tennessee, sisters-in-law Victoria Pridemore of Barbourville, Lois Mills and husband Elbert, Betty Sue Mills and Marjorie Mobley all of Corbin.  He also leaves behind a host of many other relatives and friends.

       Funeral services for Mr. Powell will be conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, September 9, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Kennon Roark officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Yeager-Powell Cemetery at Bimble. Pallbearers will be Dustin Mills, Bobby Carmack, Paul Kenneth Carmack, Jerry Carmack, James Dunn and Bill Ward. Hampton Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

      Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service at 2:00 p.m.
