Mr. Larry Joe “Duke” Gambrel, 64, of Flat Lick, passed away Thursday evening, January 16, 2020 at Laurel Branch. He was the son of Litha Smith Gambrel Brown and the late Virgil Gambrel born on August 19, 1955 in Knox County.
Duke was a retired coal truck driver and a member of the Salem Baptist Church. He enjoyed coon hunting, visiting and caring for his family, especially his mother and watching westerns.
On February 10, 1977, he united in marriage with Mary Roark and to this union two children were born.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Gambrel; two brothers, Earl Dean and Danny Dean Gambrel and a grandson, Jase Brown.
Survivors include his spouse, Mary Gambrel of Barbourville; his mother, Litha Brown of Barbourville; two children, Sue Ellen Brown and husband, Robert, of Barbourville and Larry Gambrel Jr. of Danville; brothers and sisters, David Gambrel of Barbourville, Wilma Honeycutt and husband, Cecil, and Ricky Gambrel all of Flat Lick, Donnie Gambrel and Billy Lee Gambrel both of Dewitt, Jenetta Gambrel and husband, Clyde, of Gray, Lonnie Ray Gambrel of Flat Lick and Penny Lovonne Brown of Scalf; two grandchildren, Whitney Michelle Frasure and husband, Brian, and Kasi Brown; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, January 21 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Tommy Frazier and Rev. Derrick Mills officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Lige Mills Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be his nephews.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Tuesday prior to the funeral hour.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
