Obituary for John Wayne Phipps (1953-2023)

Mr. John Wayne Phipps, 70, of Barbourville, passed away Thursday morning, April 13, 2023 at the UK Bluegrass Hospice Care Center in Lexington.  He was the son of the late A. L. and Kathleen Helton Phipps born on January 28, 1953 in Knox County.

John was a former coal miner and a member of the Lovell Missionary Baptist Church.  During high school, he played basketball for Knox Central High School.  He enjoyed being outdoors, tinkering and throwing horseshoes.

On April 8, 1971, he united in marriage with Teresa Gay Burke and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary and Donna Phipps and Louella Hampton and brothers, James, Roman and Leemon Phipps.

Survivors include his loving children, Jacob Phipps and wife, Gina, of Barbourville and Kathy Phipps and Joey Bunch of Gray; two sisters, Truleen Morgan and husband, Larry, of Lexington and Melinda Sutherland and husband, Terry, of Harrodsburg; brothers, Codell Phipps and wife, Pat, of Columbia, Bolin Phipps and wife, Marsha, of Rome, GA, Bill Phipps and wife, Lois, and Ray Phipps and wife, Connie, all of Corbin; treasured grandchildren, Brianna Collins and husband, Kyle, Dakota Phipps and wife, Tiffany, Peyton Phipps, Megan Lawson and husband, Cody, and Gina Beth Bohnert and husband, Clark; great grandchildren, Isaiah Phipps, Mia Harris and Colton Harris; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Monday, April 17 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Dale Phipps officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Phipps Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Monday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.

Expressions of sympathy may go to the funeral home to assist the family with funeral expenses.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
