Mr. John Monday “J. M.” Carnes, 92, of Barbourville, passed away Friday afternoon, March 28, 2025 at his home. He was born at Barnyard on October 17, 1932, the oldest of nine children to the late Parker and Laura Belle Taylor Carnes.
J. M. was a former heavy equipment operator and a member of the Barbourville Church of God. He was a dedicated family man and a wonderful father and grandfather. He cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, particularly when he would take them fishing, sharing his love for the hobby. They always brought a big smile to his face when they entered the room. J. M. was a jack of all trades and known for his incredible talent as a woodworker. He would often create beautiful handmade toys at Christmas for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving behind treasured memories for generations to come.
On December 21, 1958, he united in marriage with Alice Castle and to this union two children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lena Peters and husband, Leon, and Mae Payne and husband, Daw; brothers, Martin, Rev. Jimmy and Hubert Carnes; a brother-in-law, Clarence Hill and a son-in-law, Harold Broughton.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 66 years, Alice Carnes of Barbourville; two cherished daughters, Sheila Broughton of Barbourville and Kathy Carnes and Richard Click of Knoxville, TN; a sister, Pearlie Hill of Barbourville; a brother, Otto Carnes of Manchester; treasured grandchildren, Jonathan Broughton and wife, Tracy, Cody Patrick and wife, Asia, and Jazzmyne Gabbard and husband, Austin; great grandchildren, Elin Broughton, Nora Broughton, Rhett Gabbard and Arielle Gabbard; several special nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, April 3 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Sylvester Dunn officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Jonathan Broughton, Cody Patrick, Richard Click, Austin Gabbard, Rhett Gabbard and David Carnes. Honorary bearers will be Beckham Taylor and Darick Bright.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday between 6 and 8 P.M. and Thursday prior to the funeral hour.
