Barbourville, Ky. – John Calvin Cooper, 93, passed away peacefully at his home in New Albany, Indiana on August 9, 2021. John was the son of Nacie B. Brown Cooper and George W. Cooper, joyfully born to them on September 10, 1927, in Barbourville, Kentucky.
John was born and raised in Knox County, Kentucky. He served his country as a Private in the Army. In 1955, at the age of 28, he relocated to New Albany, Indiana. John was married to Alma Rose “Rosie” Jackson Cooper for 54 years. He worked for both Fetter Brothers Aluminum, and Louisville Gas and Electric before retiring in 1992. John had a strong faith in God and loved reading the Bible and Bible books. He was a dedicated member of the Graceland Baptist Church in New Albany, Indiana. In his free time, John enjoyed carpentry, and spending time outdoors, especially on the farm he and Rosie called home. John also enjoyed music, religious, country, and bluegrass were his favorites, and he was a talented musician, playing both the fiddle and guitar.
In addition to his parents, Nacie B. Brown Cooper and George W. Cooper, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Alma Rose “Rosie” Jackson Cooper, three brothers, Elza T. Cooper, William R. Cooper, and Cecil E. Cooper, and three sisters, Lucy M. Cooper Rose, Maudie Cooper, and Ollie Cooper Patterson.
Left behind to celebrate his life is his sister-in-law Freeda Miles (James), and brothers-in-law, Dennis Jackson and Darris Jackson. Additionally, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and friends survive John and will miss him dearly.
Family will receive friends at the Hopper Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, August 12, 2021, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Friday, August 13, 2021, from 9:00 AM until the funeral hour of 11:00 AM. The Reverend Jackie Smith will officiate, and Mr. James Michael Lawson will read John’s obituary and recite the Soldier’s Prayer. Musical Tributes will be performed by Paula Messer and Sandy Shackleford. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service in the Barbourville Cemetery. Casket Bearers are Kenny Gray, Gary Wayne Patterson, Fred Rexroat, John Daniel McVey, John McVey, Jeffrey Patterson, and Jacob Patterson.
