Mr. John Anthony Zgoda Jr., 72, of Davis Bend, passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 24, 2020 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was the son of John Zgoda Sr. and the late Mary Marcy Zgoda born on March 21, 1948 in Buffalo, NY.
John was a former employee of Griffin Pie in London and of CTA Acoustics, Inc. in Corbin. He was also a Safety Officer for the Hazmat Team in Laurel County. He was a former president of the Rotary Club of London from 1984 – 1985 and a Kentucky Colonel. John was a member of the Boy Scouts for 34 years and was an assistant Scout Master for the Wood Badge and Scout Master Troop 149 in London. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from 1967 – 1977. He enjoyed woodworking, growing flowers, fishing and especially enjoyed making special Christmas gifts that he shared each year with his family and friends. John was a member of the Callihan Baptist Church.
On August 17, 1985, he united in marriage with Bernice Gregory.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Annamaria Zgoda; two infant grandchildren; in-laws, James and Mary Gregory and step-mother, Fran Zgoda.
Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Bernice Zgoda of Davis Bend; his father, John Zgoda Sr.; three dear children, Virginia McDonald and husband, Rev. James, of Artemus, Mike Zgoda and wife, Tami, of Phoenix, AZ and Heather Johnson and husband, Marty, of Maineville, OH; a brother, Donnie Paul Zgoda and wife, Debbie, of Buffalo, NY; seven grandchildren, Stacey and husband, Ryan, Clarissa, Mason, Michael, Addie, Cailin and Mya; five great grandchildren, Autumn, Olivia, Krysta, Grace and Knox; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.
A private Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Highland Park Baptist Church Saturday, December 5 with Rev. Jeff Branum and Rev. James McDonald officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
Please remember, per the Governor’s mandate effective November 20, 2020 all funeral services will be private. Any person entering the funeral home is expected to be wearing a face covering of some kind at all times including graveside services and maintain the six feet of social distance.
