Mrs. Joan Owens Gray, 82, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, February 27, 2024 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Grace Alsip Harris born on August 23, 1941 in Corbin.
Joan was a former employee of Carl Morris Mine Supply, First National Bank of Corbin, Union National Bank and H & R Block, which was a perfect way for her to practice her friendly love while working. She was an active, dedicated servant of Christ and a member of the East Barbourville Baptist Church. Having rarely met a stranger, she loved serving in the WMU, “Sewing Bee”, Vacation Bible School, Sunday school and traveling with her SALT Group. She was a lady that lived life. She also enjoyed softball, sewing, cooking and most of all Jesus, then her grandbabies. She was a wonderful, loving mother, sister, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. She was more than could be asked for and yet the world is left short of enough.
She united in marriage with Duane Owens and later to Johnny Gray, both of whom preceded her in death.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her siblings, June, her twin sister, Herbert, Gene and Earl.
Survivors include her loving children, Suzanne Oberting and husband, Neal, of Cincinnati, OH and Steve Owens and wife, Brittany, of Barbourville; a step-daughter, Diana Hunt and husband, Randal; a sister, Ruth Nicholson of Crab Orchard; a brother, James Harris and wife, Pat, of Corbin; cherished grandchildren, Sara Stifano and husband, Steve, Ali Hicks and husband, Bryan, Jake Linstruth, Ethan Lester, Addison, Easton and Nolan Owens and Hannah Bell; step granddaughter, Laura Yount and husband, David; great grandchildren, Sophi, Charlotte, Abigal, Josie and Ford; step great-grandchildren, Kaela and Kyle; among other loved ones and dear friends.
Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Sunday, March 3 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Josh Smith and Rev. James Vandy officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Dozier Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Steve Satterfield, George Hammons, Derrick Poff, Eli Rogers, Roger Brooks, Ethan Lester and Easton Owens. Serving as honorary bearers will be Gloria Staley, Suzanne Satterfield, Margaret Pridemore, Pat Gray, Anna Brewer, Jake Linstruth and Johnnie Napier.
Friends may visit at the funeral home Saturday between 6 and 8 P.M. and Sunday prior to the funeral hour.
The family requests that contributions go to the East Barbourville Baptist Church, 279 Old 25E, Barbourville, KY 40906 in her memory.
