Obituary for Janet Scent Hume (1934-2024)

Janet Scent Hume passed away Sunday, September 22, 2024 in Scottsdale, AZ.  She was born December 18, 1934, to parents, Lydia Lanien and Albert Scent, in Barbourville. She attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina. In 1956, she graduated from Union College with a bachelor’s degree in organ. Shortly thereafter, she moved to California, where she attended Golden Gate Seminary.

In December 1956, Janet married Harley Hume.  They were married for 19 years and had four wonderful daughters together. Their daughters are Deborah Cox and husband, Kelly, Barbara DeLisa and husband, David, Cynthia Cragle and husband, Orval, and Lisa Walling and the late Jeffrey Walling. She adored her seven grandchildren: Ashley Cox Pals and husband, Jefferson Todd, Erin DeLisa Lehman and husband, Nathan, Jessica DeLisa Fischer and husband, Luke, Austin Walling and wife, Madison, Tyler Walling and wife, Paris, Cody DeLisa and wife, Yoshi, Macy DeLisa Smith and husband, Greg, and her sixteen great-grandchildren, all of whom were a delight to her heart.

She is also survived by her sister, Judy Wilson, and brother, Bert Scent and wife, Linda, all of Barbourville, as well as countless other relatives and friends. She often said she could stay on her knees in thanksgiving for the remarkable family God had blessed her with, all of whom love the Lord and are actively involved in His service.

Through the years, Janet faithfully served in the churches she attended. She played the piano and organ at First Baptist Church in Barbourville whenever she was needed.  During her years at North Phoenix Baptist Church, she served as the director of the college department and church organist. She moved her membership to Morningside Evangelical Presbyterian in 1983 and served for 35 years as church organist and as an Elder. Her final church home was at Phoenix Christian Reformed Church where she was involved in Women’s Bible Study for the past four years.

Janet spent her life as a prayer warrior.  If you are reading this, most likely she prayed for you, your family, friends and even those that He may put in your path.  The biggest desire of Janet’s heart was to point people to Jesus, and that she did.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at in the upper chapel of the North Phoenix Baptist Church, 5757 N Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ with Dave Tomb officiating.  Following the service there will be a tea party in her honor held at a friend’s home nearby.  The address will be shared at the service.

Janet has always had a heart for missions.  The following are two she dearly loved and supported.
