Obituary for James Michael “Mike” Disney (1952-2023)

Mr. James Michael “Mike” Disney of Barbourville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family Monday afternoon, August 28, 2023 at The Heritage Rehabilitation Center in Corbin.

Known affectionately as “Uncle Mike,” he was a pillar not just to his immediate family but also to his extended family. A faithful Christian and we find solace in knowing he is now in Heaven.

He was born to the late Ruth Abner Ramsey on April 30, 1952 in Barbourville. Mike was an avid reader of historical and Christian materials, a gun enthusiast and a lifelong fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Mike loved to spend time with his family members and friends and greatly enjoyed a ride on his motorcycle.

For many years, he made contributions to his field while working as a winch truck operator at Georgia Power electric company and retired after 33 years of service.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his sisters Rhonda and Robin Ramsey and a brother Harold Poindexter. He shared a special bond with his grandparents, Finley and Cordia Abner.

He leaves behind his loving sister, Renda, and her husband Dave; aunts, Doris Moore, Sue Kehres and Joan Sprinkles; and a host of nieces and nephews, several cousins- many of whom knew him as Uncle Mike and a special friend, Joann Cosia.

His legacy will also be cherished by friends in both Kentucky and Georgia, where he lived for 35 years. Uncle Mike’s presence will be dearly missed, but his love and influence will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in Peace, Uncle Mike.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, August 31 at 4 P.M. with Bro. David Barnard officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Charles Sprinkles, Kelly Sprinkles, Finley Moore, Carly Abner, Steve Abner, Mark Abner, Mike Chapman and Kenneth Eskew.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday after 1:30 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
