Obituary for James “J.J.” Carnes (1937-2023)

Mr. James “J.J.” Carnes age 85 of Dewitt, Kentucky departed this life on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 in the St. Joseph Hospital in London. He was the widower of Amalia Carnes and the son of Ellis and Ethel Carnes born to them on May 1, 1937 in Dewitt, Kentucky.

J.J. was a member of the Young Grove Baptist Church where he had been treasurer for many years. When he was a young boy, he would go to the church and build a fire before the service started and later in life when a furnace was installed, he would go and make sure the heat was turned on. He retired from the United States Navy. J.J. loved his cats and dog BB and his bird rainbow. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his son Ellis who lived with him and took care of him for the past two years.

He is preceded in death by his wife Amalia Carnes, his parents, Ellis and Ethel Carnes, one brother William Royce Carnes and a brother-in-law, Clay Harmon.

Left behind to mourn his passing, his devoted son, Ellis J. Carnes and wife Teresa of Barbourville, his sister, Deanna Harmon of Berea, Kentucky, step-sons, Michael Carnes of Alpine, California and Johnny Carnes and wife Gwen of Corbin, a step-daughter, Dorothy Carnes of Alpine, California, two grandchildren, Presley Carnes and husband Richard and Curtis James Carnes, step grandchildren, Christopher Carnes and wife Melissa, Jessica Frick and husband Josh, Nathan Carnes and Melora Carnes, great-grandchildren, Bailee, Reign and Zayne Branstutter, ten step-grandchildren, a special nephew, John Kennedy and wife Amy along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives and special friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Carnes will be conducted in the Hampton Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, February 6, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Mike Collins and Rev. Donnie Mills officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Will Carnes Cemetery at Dewitt. Pallbearers will be, Nathan Carnes, Richard Branstutter, John Kennedy, Melora Carnes and Devin Thompson, Johnny Carnes.

Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. and on Monday from 12:00 noon until the hour of service at 2:00 p.m.
