Obituary for Isanelle Goodman Fultz (1919-2021)

Barbourville, Ky. – Isanelle Goodman Fultz, 101, also lovingly known as “Granny Fultz” or “Granny Nelle”, passed away peacefully, March 3, 2021. Nelle was joyfully born to Robert Taylor “RT” Goodman and Anna Laura Creasy Goodman on December 26, 1919.  Nelle was blessed with the good fortune of being born into a big, happy, and loving family – she had five sisters and three brothers, all whom she loved dearly.

Nelle was a lifelong resident of Barbourville, except for a few brief residencies that took her elsewhere. Her love of her birthplace and her deep bond with her family always called  her back to Sharp’s Gap – both in life and in death.

On November 23, 1938, Nelle married another Knox Countian, Harold Fultz. They were married 58 years and delighted in raising the two children their marriage produced: son, William Taylor “Bill” Fultz and daughter, Sherry Fultz Davis. Family was consistently central to Nelle’s values and life. Loving each of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren deeply, and showing love to her siblings and to her nieces and nephews was important to Granny Fultz. Also of importance, was her special relationship, with Macy Scharr, her youngest grandchild. Macy lived next door to Granny Fultz, and he seemed to be the light of her life, ever since he was born.

Nelle’s family shared the following loving memories of their cherished, Granny Fultz. She was faithful to her church and offered generously to that community, her gift of being a talented musician, as both a pianist and soloist.  She was a talented athlete, and extremely proud of this accomplishment/gift. She ran track, as an 8th grader on the high school track team and was lauded with numerous awards for her abilities. Granny Fultz loved to cook for family and for friends – and was known for those delicious special dishes – creations that were amazing, and that always contained lots of sugar! Her family reminisced about her meatloaf, banana pudding, chocolate cake and her best remembered, albeit secret recipe, for “Granny’s Corn”. Her family recalled a fond and everlasting memory of Nelle and her sisters competing at every Goodman family reunion and every meal at those reunions, to see whose food, especially whose biscuits were the tastiest. Nelle was always proud of her appearance, even as a centenarian, she maintained her desire to always look presentable and to be properly dressed for the occasion in which she was participating.

Nelle was an Honorable Kentucky Colonel and Honorable Kentucky Admiral, but her greatest personal and most meaningful achievement was being Mother to Bill and Sherry, Granny to Jeff, Steve, Becky, Chantay, Kevin, Nicholas and Macy and Great-Grandmother to 19 grands and Great-Great Grandmother to the recent and newest addition to the Fultz family.

Along with her parents, Nelle’s beloved husband Harold preceded her in death, as did five sisters: Eva Loftice, Callie Powell, Bertha King, Zelma VanBever and Elizabeth Goodman Logan and three brothers: James Roy Goodman, Cecil Goodman and George Franklin Goodman. One grandson, Steve Fultz, preceded Nelle in death.

Nelle leaves behind her son, Bill (Beverly) and daughter, Sherry; six grandchildren:  Jeff Fultz, (Gina), Becky Humphrey, Chantay Foley (Paul), Kevin Foley, Nicholas Mandel and Macy Scharr (Danielle); nineteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, as well as, many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, March 18, 2021 at the Christian Life Fellowship Church at 2:00 P.M. The Reverends Dwell Perry and Ronnie Mitchell will officiate.

The Fultz Family will receive friends and family from 11:00 A.M. until the funeral hour.

Immediately following the funeral, Mrs. Fultz’s interment will be at the Mayhew Cemetery, Sharp’s Gap.  The family has chosen as casket bearers: Jeff Fultz, Macy Scharr, Kevin Foley, Kirk Humphrey, Alex Fultz and Paul Marino.

Covid restrictions apply. All attendees should wear a mask and social distance, at least six feet apart.
