Obituary for Howard L. Carter (1938-2023)

Mr. Howard L. Carter, 84, of Barbourville, passed away Friday morning, August 18, 2023 at his home.  He was the son of the late Hesper and Dove Hembree Carter born on December 18, 1938 in Knox County.

Howard was a former truck driver and a member of the Artemus First Baptist Church where he drove the church bus for many years.  He enjoyed spending time fishing and riding four-wheelers. Howard faithfully served his country in the United States Navy.

On December 31, 1962, he united in marriage with Betty Lee Ledington and to this union three children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and a brother, E. G. Carter.

Survivors include his loving children, Wendell Louis Carter and Becky of Barbourville, James Anthony Carter and wife, Susan, and Dena Denise Ormston and husband, Guy, all of Lorain, OH; a sister, Betty Ann Fitts and husband, Cecil, of Cross Plains, TN; three brothers, A. Y. Carter and wife, Wanda, and Don Carter and wife, Bernice, all of Artemus and Julius Carter and wife, Levonne, of Brunswick, OH; three treasured grandchildren, Brandon Carter, Rachel Holliday and husband, Ryan, and Karly Masterson and husband, Paul; four great grandchildren, Layla Carter, Tyler Simmons, Kyrie and Conor Holliday; a special niece, Diana Woodings; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Tuesday, August 22 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Ralph Halcomb officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Hunter-Ledington Cemetery with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be family and friends.  Tim Smith will be serving as an honorary bearer.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Tuesday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.

Expressions of sympathy may go to the Artemus First Baptist Church in his memory.
