Mr. Herbert Hammons, 90, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, February 25, 2020 at Baptist Health Corbin. He was born November 14, 1929 to the late George Hammons and Alice Smith Hammons Harp at Barnyard in Knox County.
Herbert was a member of the Roadside Baptist Church and a 24 year employee of the Cadillac Motor Company in Detroit, MI. He was an avid UK basketball fan and enjoyed tinkering with cars.
On November 27, 1953, he united in marriage with Wanda Fay Jackson and to this union three children were born.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Gracie Hammons and Beatrice Broughton; two brothers, Shelby Hammons and Bill Hammons; a sister-in-law, Janet Hammons and a brother-in-law, Cecil Broughton.
He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 66 years, Wanda Hammons of Barbourville; three children, Herbert Hammons Jr. and wife, Donna Rae, of Woodhaven, MI, Rev. Dennis A. Hammons and wife, Donna, of London and Angela M. Smith and husband, Derek, of Keavy; five grandchildren, Christin Mofield and husband, Chris, Joshua Hammons and wife, Emily, Dharti Hammons, Meghann Smith and Gaven Smith; a great grandson, Caleb Mofield; two sisters and their husbands, Cora and Charles Harp and Joyce and Rev. Dennis Chesnut; a brother, Freddy Ray Hammons of Taylor, MI; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Friday, February 28 at 7 P.M. with Rev. Rick Partin officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Freddy Ray Hammons, Herbert Hammons Jr., Dennis A. Hammons, Derek Smith, Pat Chesnut, Joshua Hammons, Gaven Smith, Chris Mofield and Caleb Mofield. Honorary bearers will be Dr. Ashburn and his staff, George Crawford, Don Cheek and Eddie North.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday after 4 P.M. until the funeral hour.
Expressions of sympathy may go to the Roadside Baptist Church in his memory.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
