Obituary for Harold Randall Carey (1944-2020)

Mr. Harold Randall Carey, 76, of Barbourville, passed away Wednesday morning, November 25, 2020 at his home.  He was the son of the late Bruce and Magdalene Burch Carey born on April 19, 1944 in Barbourville.

Harold was a retired Commonwealth Life Insurance Agent and a member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville where he was a long-time Sunday School teacher, ordained deacon and served in many other areas of ministry as needed.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, UK football and dearly loved watching everything his grandchildren were involved in.

On November 22, 1967, he united in marriage with Shirley Ann Messer and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, George and Irene Messer.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley Carey of Barbourville; beloved children, Brian Douglas Carey and wife, Jennifer, of Barbourville and Wendy Michelle Smith and husband, Jerry, of London; a brother, Jerry Winston Carey and wife, Melva, of Barbourville; treasured grandchildren, Carey Elisabeth and Jeremiah Russell Smith and Anna Joyce and Elijah Bruce Carey; nieces, Patti Payne and husband, Justin, and Jennifer Worley; great niece and nephews, Mara and Drew Wilson and Dylan and Brady Worley; among other loved ones and dear friends.

A private family funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, November 28 with Rev. Tyler Shields and Rev. Jamie Maxey officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Dylan Worley, Brady Worley, Drew Wilson, Justin Payne, John Bill Prichard and Leamon Davidson.  Honorary bearers will the Dairy Queen breakfast crew.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.

Please remember, per the Governor’s mandate effective November 20, 2020 all funeral services will be private.  Any person entering the funeral home is expected to be wearing a face covering of some kind at all times including graveside services and maintain the six feet of social distance.  We appreciate your help in following these guidelines so we can continue to serve our community during these trying times in the safest manner possible.
