Mrs. Gladys Baird Campbell, affectionately known as Granny, was taken to her eternal Heavenly home on Saturday morning, June 13, 2020 at the age of 96 with family by her side. She was born in Laurel County on September 21, 1923 to Larkin and Goldie Owens Gibbons. Both parents and her baby brother died by the time she was 7 years old. She then went to live with her grandmother, Catherine Gibbons, who cared for her to adulthood.
She graduated from Union College specializing in childhood education and eventually became the School District Educational Coordinator. She especially enjoyed cultivating flowering plants, baking confectionaries and was devout in her unwavering faith.
On August 31, 1946, she married the love of her life, Herbert Douglas Baird, with whom she had two daughters. Herbert preceded her in death in 1954. Many years later, she remarried and was preceded in death by her second husband, Charlie Campbell.
She was a long-time resident of Heidrick before moving with her daughters to northern Kentucky and later to Sarasota, FL, where she lived out the rest of her life.
She is survived by two loving daughters, Brenda Baird Spegal and Mary Baird Hopper; four grandchildren, Nathaniel Baird Boggs, Jahonna Catherine Baird, Gary Ray Spegal and David Larkin Spegal; two great-grandchildren, Rozlynn Anne Boggs and Nikolai Ryker Harvey; among other loved ones and dear friends.
Her funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, June 20 at 4 P.M. with Rev. Herbie Hoskins officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Burch Alford Cemetery at Artemus.
Casket bearers will be family and friends.
Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday after 2 P.M. until the funeral hour.
