Barbourville, Ky. – George Goodman Peace, Jr., 98, of Kay Jay, Kentucky, passed away November 14, 2024. George was the son of George Peace, Sr. and Lucie Wynn Peace born to them October 7, 1926, in Louellen (Harlan), Kentucky.
George was a kind, hardworking man who loved God and family above all else. George also loved his country, serving in the US Army during WWII. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he worked as a prison guard. After leaving the Army, George used his GI Bill to go and train in Chicago, as an electrician. At age 20 he became a coal miner; first working for Kayjay Mines and later for the Sunrise Coal Company. George worked in the mines, until he was injured by a falling rock in 1967. George united in marriage to Norma Christine Logan on March 28, 1951. Providing for his wife and children was of upmost importance to George. George was a Godly man of the Baptist faith. He loved to read the Bible and in 1962 he and his wife Norma were saved. Unless he was sick, George never missed church. He was a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Warren Missionary Baptist Church for 23 years and a Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Big Brush Missionary Baptist Church for 36 years. In his spare time George enjoyed hunting and fishing. George will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left behind to mourn his passing are sons: Michael Wayne Peace and Stanley Kay Peace and wife, Violet; daughter, Delores Christine Peace Cecil and husband Barry; brother, James Peace and wife, Earlene; and sister, Shirley Morgan; ten cherished grandchildren: Travis Michael Peace, Christopher Bryan Peace, Jessica Hall and husband, Jeremy, Anna Peace, Stanton Kayne Peace and wife, Shawnda, Robert Dunaway and wife, Selena, Donald Dunaway, and wife, Heather, Tanisha Jones and husband, David, Hannah Cox and husband, Austin, and Haylee Lewis also survive George as do nineteen great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild due to be born in April of 2025.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George Peace, Sr. and Lucie Wynn Peace; by his beloved wife, Norma Christine Logan; by his brothers, Jay B. Peace and Morris “Bud” Peace; by his sisters, Imogene Tolliver, Wilma Short, and Bernice Smith by his grandson, Brandon Michael Peace; by his daughter-in-law, Roelene Peace; by his father-in-law, Grover Cleveland Logan; and by his mother-in-law, Ella Mae Logan.
The Peace family will receive friends on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at Hopper Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and on Monday, November 18, 2024, at Big Brush Creek Missionary Church from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour of 1:00 PM. Reverend Dale Phipps will officiate assisted by Jimmy Wayne Miller. Musical Tribute to be performed by Kelsey Ferguson. Interment will follow the funeral service in Tinsley Cemetery, Trosper, Kentucky. The family has selected as Casket Bearers: Robert Logan, Jacob Logan, Cody Logan, Mike Wells, Dave Messer, Colton Jones, and Stanton Peace. Honorary Casket Bearers are James Stevenson, Bob Sturdivant, M. A. Logan, James Miller, Rick Blair, Wade Hurst and Sam Buchanan.
The Peace family expresses special thanks and gratitude to Baptist Health of Corbin, Kentucky and Dr. Carter of Barbourville, Kentucky for the great care of their father.
