Mr. George D. Peace Jr., 71, of Barbourville, passed away Monday afternoon, March 9, 2020 at his home. He was the son of the late George Peace Sr. and Irene Barton Peace born on April 9, 1948 in Harlan County.
George was a member of the Little Poplar Creek Baptist Church where he served as deacon and treasurer. He was very active in church and always tried his best to do what the Lord would have him to do. George never met a stranger and having worked as a car salesman for over 45 years and at the radio station, he made many life long friends that he kept in touch with over the years. He faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force.
On December 31, 1974, he united in marriage with Barbara Matlock.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan Peace; two half brothers, Bill Peace and Billy Jo Peace; a step-sister, Pauline and a special cousin, Irma Wallace.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 45 years, Barbara Matlock Peace of Barbourville; two sons, Sean Peace and wife, Teresa, of Woodbine and Chris Peace and wife, Rebecca, of Bryants Store; two great grandsons, Colton and Elliot Peace; two step-grandchildren, Logan Hampton and Chesney Hampton that brought much joy to his life; five sisters-in-law, Alma Carriveau of Bailey Switch, Karen Gibson and husband, Ronnie, of Flat Creek, Peggy Helton and husband, Gary, of Flat Creek, Mary Brown and husband, Leslie, of Barbourville, Debbie Lawson and husband, Wendell, of Flat Lick; two brothers-in-law, Ronnie Matlock and wife, Jackie, of Goldens Creek and Bobby Matlock of Flat Creek; among other loved ones and dear friends.
His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Saturday, March 14 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Ronnie Rose officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Barbourville Cemetery.
Casket bearers will be Wendell Gregory, Leslie Brown, Bobby Matlock, Gary Helton, Ronnie Gibson and Ronnie Matlock. Honorary bearers will be the deacons of his church, Lonnie Lane, Bill Rhodes, Gary Helton and Ryan Mays, all members of the Little Poplar Creek Baptist Church and a special friend, Tim Terrell.
Friends may call at the funeral home Friday between 6 and 9 P.M. and Saturday prior to the funeral hour.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Atienza and staff for their love and care for George for many years; Baptist Corbin Oncology; Bluegrass Hospice Care and all family and caregivers that gave such excellent care to him and made it possible for him to be home with his loved ones.
