Obituary for Douglas McArthur Marler (1947-2020)

Mr. Douglas McArthur Marler, 73, of Gray, passed away Monday evening, November 9, 2020 at his home.  He was the son of the late Charles S. and Gurthielee Cox Marler born on January 1, 1947 in Lee County, VA.

Douglas was a former locomotive engineer with CSX and a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  He enjoyed fishing, wood carving, camping and spending time with his grandchildren.  He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

On January 24, 1968, he united in marriage with Beverly Sue Owens and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Jimmy Lou Garland, Alfaye Rogers and Sewelline Peavley and two brothers, Charles Sonny Marler and Delton Marler.

Survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Beverly Sue Marler; beloved children, Renia Owens and husband, Todd, and Larry Marler and wife, Tracy; three sisters, Carol Short and husband, Steve, David Irene Cheek and husband, Don, and Terrie Frederick and husband, Rev. Paul Frederick; treasured grandchildren, Shaw Owens and wife, Michaela, and Jenna Owens; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Thursday, November 12 at 8 P.M. with Rev. Garrett Garland and Rev. Josh Smith officiating.  He will be laid to rest in the Anderson Campbell Cemetery Friday, November 13 at 11 A.M. with military funeral honors.

Casket bearers will be Robbie Peavley, Donnie Owens, Jeff Jones, Logan Owens, Corey Owens and Fred Hensley.  Honorary bearers will be Ray Payne, Rodney Smith, Ronnie Jones and the staff of Knox County Home Health.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to his caretakers and others who helped to provide care, support and prayers for the family.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday after 6 P.M. until the funeral hour.  Family and friends will meet at the funeral home Friday at 10:30 A.M. and go in procession to the cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
