Obituary for Don Hammons (1936-2023)

Mr. Don Hammons, 87, of Heidrick, the husband of Nola Faye Hammons, passed away Thursday evening, May 4, 2023 at his home. He was the son of the late Matt and Jean Hubbard Hammons born on January 14, 1936 at Heidrick.

Don was a retired sales manager with Kern’s Bakery and a devoted member of the Heidrick Holiness Church. He loved gardening, fishing and cheering on UK basketball team. He enjoyed attending his great-grandchildren’s ball games. In his younger days, he played on the Barbourville Governors baseball team and was the self proclaimed best short stop.

On May 11, 1960, he united in marriage with Nola Faye Blevins and to this union two children were born.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Aubrey, Ralph, S.J. and Homer Hammons; sisters, Joyce Hammons, Margaret Callebs, Jane Dunning, Vivian Borowski, Florence Owens and Ailene Stocks; brothers-in-law, Ricky Blevins, Frank Merida, Johnny Root, Stan Borowski, Junior Owens and Larry Dunning; sister-in-law, Mary Hammons; mother and father-in-law, J.D. and Nannie Blevins; special, life-long friends, Gooder and Joyce McWilliams.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 63 years, Faye Hammons of Heidrick; children, Rev. Donnie “Duke” Hammons and wife, Delora, and Sheila Terrell and husband, Tim, all of Heidrick; sister, Geraldine Brewer and husband, Larry, of Warren, MI; brother, Dave Hammons and wife, Jan, of Barbourville; grandchildren, Tiffany Loveless and husband, Stephen and Tabitha Frederick and husband, Shawn, all of Heidrick and Jonathan Hammons of Barbourville; great-grandchildren, Aubrey and Gunner Jones, Anthony Loveless and Timberly, Braylen and Brylee Frederick; several nieces and nephews; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of the Knox Funeral Home Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 4 P.M. with Rev. Herbie Hoskins and Rev. Tommy Frazier officiating. He will be laid to rest in the Tuggle-Doolin Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be his nephews and friends.

Serving as honorary bearers will be Greg Fisher, Jerry Carey, Jack Ketchum, Wendall Hinkle, Shelby Stewart, Mark Moren, Hoss Tuggle, Doug Logan and his church family of the Heidrick Holiness Church.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Wednesday after 12 Noon until the funeral hour.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knox Funeral Home.
