Mrs. Clara Elizabeth Hammons, 74, of Barbourville, passed away Tuesday morning, March 31, 2020 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Herman Helton and Mary Foley Helton born on May 13, 1945 in Harlan County.
Clara was a retired elementary schoolteacher from the Barbourville Independent School System and a member of the East Barbourville Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading and tending flowers.
On September 3, 1966, she united in marriage with Doug Hammons and to this union two daughters were born.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Carl Kleinschmidt and a brother, Kenneth Helton.
Survivors include her dearly loved daughters, Shannon Frederick and husband, Jeff, and Kim Minton and husband, Chris, all of Barbourville; a sister-in-law, Marsha Farris of Barbourville; five grandchildren, Devon Frederick and wife, Taylor, Connor Frederick, Cayden Wagner, Aven Wagner and Jaxon Minton; among other loved ones and dear friends.
A private family graveside service will be conducted at the Barbourville Cemetery Saturday, April 4 with Rev. Josh Smith officiating. A public celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
Casket bearers will be her family. Serving as an honorary bearer will be Dr. Daniel Whitley.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Priscilla Belcher, Julia Seelye and Betty Bullock for their excellent care.
