Obituary for Barbara Ann Tye Black (1924-2022)

Barbara Ann Tye Black entered and departed this life at the same address on Pine Street in Barbourville. She was born on January 13, 1924 to Myra Amis Tye and Kager Logan Tye, both of whom preceded her in death. She passed peacefully at home on April 22, 2022.

Barbara was a graduate of Barbourville High School and Georgetown College. She taught school, worked as a church secretary and worked with her husband in the office of the Barbourville Housing Authority. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Barbourville, although she attended the First Christian Church of Barbourville with her husband for many years. She served on the Knox County Library Board for twenty-five years and was a member emeritus of the Barbourville Woman’s Club.

On December 2, 1949, she united in marriage with Charles David “Doonie” Black, who predeceased her, and together they raised three children, Susan K. Black of Maryville, TN, Charles D. “Brud” Black, Jr. and wife, Diane, of Mt. Vernon and Dr. W. Scott Black and wife, Lisa, of Owensboro. Barbara is also survived by five grandchildren, Leigh Green Hooper and husband, Adam of Tucson, AZ, David Tye Green and wife, Robin, of Spring Hill, TN, Charles E. Green and wife, Elizabeth, of Nashville, TN, Gina Hoehn and husband, Patrick, of Naples, FL and Sydney K. Black and Seth Finnen of Nashville, TN, four great-grandchildren, Carson, Claire, Tye and Marleigh Green, all of TN and two very special caregivers, Deborah Reel and Sue Hensley, who became family.

Per her request, family and close friends will gather at the Barbourville Cemetery on Saturday, April 30 at 11 A.M. for a graveside service, with Rev. Greg McClellan officiating and grandchildren serving as casket bearers.

Friends may call at the cemetery Saturday prior to the service time.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations to the First Christian Church of Barbourville or the Knox Historical Museum.
