Barbourville, Ky. – Arvil Hammons, 77, passed away peacefully on September 9, 2020. Arvil was the son of George Hammons and Gracie Hinkle Hammons, joyfully born to them on March 20, 1943 in Bimble, Kentucky.
Arvil was raised in Knox County but left his Appalachian home when he was a young adult. He headed South, living in Pinellas County, Florida for 20 years, then West, to California, living there for 5 years, before returning to Pinellas County, Florida, where he retired. Arvil worked for many years for Citgo Oil as an Executive Account Representative for the Western United States. Later in life, in 2015, and after he had returned to Florida, Arvil formed his own Medicaid Transportation Company, Arvil Hammons,LLC.
Arvil will forever be remembered as a genuinely kind man, as a deep thinker and as a problem solver. He treasured his family and loved spending time with them. He was extremely attentive to his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Arvil’s kindness extended beyond his immediate family. He was always willing to help anyone who was in need, including opening his own home to many people over the years who were without a warm place to shelter. Arvil was a selfless man, whom his daughters recall not having any faults other than maybe being “too nice” on occasion.
In addition to his parents, George Hammons and Gracie Hinkle Hammons, Arvil was preceded in death by his brother Paul Kenneth Hammons. Left behind to celebrate his life are his beloved daughters, Missy Gonzalez (Greg) and Angie Hammons; four grandchildren: Justin Goelz (Micha), Tyler Goelz (Caitlin), Casie Soto Goelz (Miguel), and John Hammons (Tayla) and four great grandchildren: Lexie, Keith, Hazelynne Grace, and Arvil Lee. A nephew, Duane Hammons (Missy); great niece, Kendra Bays (Steven) and great nephew, Austin Hammons (Holly), as well as, a host of great-great nieces and nephews will also miss Arvil greatly.
