Obituary for Agnes Allen Mays (1943-2024)

Barbourville, Ky. – Agnes Allen Mays, 81, of Gray, Kentucky passed away peacefully December 6, 2024. She was born to Elmer Allen and Mary Childers Allen on September 29, 1943.  

Agnes was a graduate of Knox Central High School, Class of 1964.  Agnes went on to be a professional seamstress for Warner Sewing, Barbourville, Kentucky.  She was united in marriage to Clifton E. Mays, Jr. on December 30, 1967.  Together, they raised 3 children, Pamela Jeanine Mays Strange, (Michael), Teresa Lynn Mays Vasos, (Troy), and Steven Allen Mays, (Sarah).

Agnes enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading her Bible and being a homemaker.  She was a dedicated member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church and loved her church family.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Mary Allen, husband Clifton E. Mays, Jr., sisters Juanita Branstutter and Vivian Hensley, brother James Allen, and grandson, Jeremiah Mays. She is survived by her children, daughters Pamela J. Mays Strange, Teresa L. Mays Vasos, son Steven Allen Mays, eight grandchildren, Samantha Strange Spraggs, Clifton J. Vasos, Chad J. Vasos, Tabitha J. Strange, Makayla Messer Rose, Hunter A. Mays, Kailyn Grace Mays, and Logan Eli Mays, and an extra blessing with 3 great grandchildren; Evelyn R. Vasos, Lucas A. Vasos, and Alivia J. Rose.  She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, a sister-in-law, good friend and neighbor, Betty, and many others to mourn her passing.

Visitation will be at Hopper Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 11:00 AM until the funeral hour of 1:00 PM with Preacher Jim Bargo officiating.  Interment will follow the funeral service at Barbourville Cemetery.  Pallbearers are: Steven Mays, Michael Strange, Troy Vasos, Clifton Vasos, Chad Vasos, Hunter Mays, and Dave Spraggs.
