Five Knox County Deputies killed in the Line of Duty approved for inclusion to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C

Official Press Release from Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith

In September, 2018 Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith collected and submitted information to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation on the following five Knox County Deputies that were killed in the line of duty.

Deputy John Brooks age unknown shot and killed December 21, 1908 while attempting to serve a warrant in Artemus.

Deputy Robert Smith age unknown shot December 21, 1908 while attempting to serve a warrant in Artemus. Died on December 23, 1908

Deputy James Smith age 35 shot and killed October 27, 1914 while attempting to serve a warrant in Flat Lick.

Deputy Sim Lockard age 30 killed April 14, 1932 while participating in a moonshine still raid in Gray.

Deputy Jack Mills age 32 shot and killed May 18, 1958 while investigating a vehicle crash in Flat Lick.

Sheriff Mike Smith is very pleased to announce that he has just received notification that all five of the Knox County Deputies have been approved for inclusion to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Their names will be formally dedicated at a ceremony on May 13, 2019 at the 31st Annual Candlelight Vigil during National Police Week.

On that date, these heroes will finally get the recognition they deserve for making the supreme sacrifice.
